Indianapolis–based D.R.L.N. (short for Doppler Radar and the Local Network) have been blowing audience’s minds for a while now with their incendiary live sets, and they have gotten closer than ever to capturing that experience on the singles they have released recently. “Gran Torino” gets in and out quickly at 1:17, a metal-tinged rager with a momentary breakdown and a calculated fury to match the Dillinger Escape Plan or Botch.
“A to B” swirls in more of a groove and doesn’t sound too far off from a mix of At the Drive-In and Refused. “No Prophecy” lands somewhere between these two poles, with some more traditional hardcore elements, including a killer breakdown and a taunt aimed at someone who seems to be trying to spoil the fun of hardcore dancing at shows.
Throughout each song, disparate elements that shouldn’t work come together effortlessly to create songs whose roots and influences are visible but are sewn together in a fresh way. Plus, Maxwell R. Denari, the lead singer of D.R.L.N., is fond of doing pushups during the band’s sets, and they are currently on tour, so go see them.
