This indie folk duo shows promise, but has some work to do.
It makes sense that Miranda Dawn (with the perfect Americana name) and Chris Hawkes appeared on The Voice. Their singing carries each song on Yours and Mine, meaning that -- at its worst -- the album's always at least pleasant. Its consistency reveals an unusual sequencing that backloads the album, with some of the best songs tucked away near the end. While the singers excel individually, and especially together, they do have some work to do in developing their songwriting. Their folk rock could use some more dynamics and a more careful avoidance of cliché and rote rhyming (as on the title track). They're close now, though, and should be interesting to watch over the next few years. Dawn and Hawkes have plenty of talent, and if they put the work into their artistry, they could create something memorable.
