Drive-By Truckers – “Runaway Train” (Live) (Singles Going Steady)

This early pre Drive-By track shows how the band’s music has always been firmly rooted in keeping a pulsating beat.

Kevin Korber: Patterson Hood begins this by announcing its origins as a song from his days with Adam’s House Cat, the band he formed with Mike Cooley before Drive-By Truckers. It sure sounds like it; the song maintains one chord progression throughout. It’s about as simple as you can get before the guitar heroics at the end, but it sounds as if the band had fun playing this. Die-hard Truckers fans may have some fun with this, too. [6/10]

Steve Horowitz: The Truckers have always been a great live band, so it only makes sense of them to put out a live album and perform songs that the less than fanatical fan would know. This early pre Drive-By track shows how the band’s music has always been firmly rooted in keeping a pulsating beat. There’s the main attraction. Plus, Patterson Hood really nails the vocals. You can sing along with him to the catchy lines about a “Runaway Twain” even if you have never heard the song before. [7/10]
