Kirby Sybert's Soulful Live Take on "My Maker" (premiere)
Captured live at Philadelphia's Johnny Brenda's, Kirby Sybert breathes new life into "My Maker" from his LP, Happy People Make Happy Things.
Kirby Sybert offers a new live version of the song "My Maker". The track, which appears in a slightly different form on his 2020 LP Happy People Make Happy Things, spotlights Sybert's crystalline vocals, his impeccable phrasing and soulful timbre. The track also features a tasteful but extended psych-inflected instrumental section which suggests that Sybert and band are a can't-miss live act. Shot at one of Sybert's favorite Philadelphia haunts, the video provides a moving performance and powerful reminder that the live arena still exists even if we're distanced from it right now.
"We always love playing at Johnny Brenda's whenever we're all in Philly," says Sybert. "It's our go-to spot. The stage is great and we're normally there playing pool and hanging out anyway. I wanted to capture the magic of that stage and the band has been crushing the tunes so I wanted to bottle that moment. 'My Maker' felt like the perfect song to capture so I enlisted Mike Gallagher and Matt DeCaro to shoot it. It's always a very intimate moment in the set because it starts with just me and my guitar. When the band comes in, it starts rocking, and then we added the jam to the end. It's one of my favorite songs to play live and that video encapsulates the feeling perfectly."
