When a former member of the world’s most successful boy band releases an album, there can be credit given to him for trying. When that record is a cohesive collection of sunny pop anthems, even more credit can be given. On this third solo album, titled How Did I Get Here? Louis Tomlinson, one fifth of the X-Factor-spawned One Direction, responds to a criticism levied at his previous solo efforts: mixing pop and indie rock, they gave the impression of someone transforming from heartthrob to auteur without purpose. Changing course, in a 2026 interview with Billboard, Tomlinson said, “My voice sounds pretty good on a pop song.”
How Did I Get Here? is the result of an acquiescence to Tomlinson’s boy band roots and an outgrowth of them. On the compositional level, the album’s tracks embody a quality often attributed to One Direction‘s work: bland, corporate pop. Although the beachy, 1970s-inspired sound of How Did I Get Here? is a thoughtful, intentional vision, without the harmonies of a five-piece band, Tomlinson cannot elevate lacklustre material.
That being said, “Sunflowers” and “Lazy” conjure a breezy, reggae-influenced atmosphere that outlines a distinct pop identity for a former boyband fixture. However, “Palaces” and “Lemonade” see Tomlinson treading familiar territory, singing shout-along choruses about an everywoman muse. “She’s so bitter, she’s so sweet / A little taste is all I need,” he says on “Lemonade”. Even the singer’s palpable enthusiasm cannot redeem such a blatant use of cliché.
At several points, the album pivots from its sunny disposition with surprising grace. In “Dark to Light”, Tomlinson addresses his sister, who passed away from an accidental overdose in 2019: “I wish you could see how you look in my eyes.” The restraint of the production, which allows Tomlinson’s soft vocals and a muted electric guitar to coexist, departs from boy band maximalism. “Dark to Light” also calls to mind Tomlinson’s mother, who passed away from cancer in 2016, and his former One Direction bandmate, Liam Payne, who fatally fell from a hotel balcony in Buenos Aires in 2024.
“Lucid” closes the album’s thematic throughline by invoking the titular phrase. Following a whispered chorus, Tomlinson asks, “How did I get here?” as guitars swell, evoking a feeling of tortured reflection. Personal tragedy and the burden of creating a separate identity from One Direction have dogged Tomlinson in recent years. As the title How Did I Get Here? implies, merely looking back at the journey may be the best way to define it.
The gravitas of “Lucid” is a rare burst of insight on an album that, as a whole, lacks a distinct point of view. However, even if Tomlinson has little to say, as a One Direction alumnus, his audience will always superimpose meaning onto him. He just needs to remain receptive to its gaze.
In “Sunflowers”, Tomlinson displays the sly self-awareness required of modern pop stars. In a 2025 Rolling Stone interview, he explained that the lyric “sick and tired of smoking in the rain” refers to his decision to record the album in Costa Rica rather than his native England. Overall, How Did I Get Here? humanises Tomlinson and makes this writer feel slightly guilty for giving it a mediocre review. However, as a former X-Factor contestant, Louis Tomlinson should be accustomed to such scrutiny. That is, after all, how he got here.
