Melville – ‘The New Zero’ (album stream) (premiere)

“The New Zero is, in its essence, the idea that the aftermath of an event is malleable,” says Melville lead singer Ryan T. Jacobs. “Things, both good and bad, happen to people on a daily basis and we can’t usually affect the input coming our way but what we can do is affect the outcome of what has already happened and where we go from there.”

Recorded by Gregg Williams (the Dandy Warhols, Sheryl Crow), mastered by Paul Gold (the War on Drugs, Grizzly Bear), and influenced by the likes of Tom Petty and Snow Patrol, Portland’s Melville is adept at creating earthen, emotive rock-and-roll that transcends era labels. Their latest LP, New Zero, only affirms the band’s continued knack for developing compelling melodies amidst sinewy instrumentation, which has brought them to become quick representatives of the growing West Coast indie rock scene.

“It’s akin to the idea of overtime or extra innings in sports; you’ve already achieved something. Otherwise, you wouldn’t be in the overtime period to begin with,” Jacobs continues. “

“However, despite all you’ve already done, the only thing that matters is what you do next. All that you’ve done accumulates into the new zero where you find yourself. It is an incredibly free place to be when you recognize that everything can be a new starting point and what matters most is simply what you do next with ‘the new zero’ that you have.”
