Michael Showalter is a humorous fellow. Not funny ha ha, his comedy elicits smirks more than chuckles. You might know him from television. He starred on MTV’s sketch show The State and Comedy Central’s Stella. Or maybe you’d recognize him from his films Wet Hot American Summer and The Baxter. If so, you know he’s bawdy more than dirty and silly more than zany. He jokes about being confused with Saved By The Bell’s Screech, washing his hands after taking a pee, and wondering why someone would attend his show with her pet cat. This part live, part studio mix of routines shows that Showalter knows how to work a crowd and build a skit out through timing and vocal inflections. It’s not so much what Showalter says, as much as how he says it.

Oh, That Tiger!: Fritz Lang's Indian Epics

Fritz Lang's The Tiger of Eschnapur and The Indian Tomb are hothouse flowers of cinema with gyrating dancers, man-eating tigers, pagan magic, groaning lepers, and mythic moments. Has Lang ever come up with more desperate, mad, or heroic symbols of futile struggle?
