Milenasongs: Seven Sisters

Muted and fragile, the currently Germany-based Milenasong crafts strange, ephemeral folk songs with a combination of age-yellowed instrumentation and modern electronic ornamentation. Unfortunately, the pairing, intriguing though it is, like a moodier 19th-century Laura Veirs cast out to wander the moors, doesn’t entirely come together just yet. The songs shift uneasily, skirting structure for atmosphere. Details can fade into the hissing production, and overlaid vocals lack the clarity to pierce through the mix and tie it together. Still, there’s promise here: a willingness to bend the rules, to delve into the delights of pure sonic texturing, or, as on late highlight “Standby”, to shift suddenly into a staggering percussive build. Seven Sisters is an interesting debut, but one whose sound seems to be not yet fully realized.
