In the early ‘00s it looked as if there would be a mass movement of musical acts who looked and sounded like the retro flavor of Mooney Suzuki and Hot Hot Heat. Blaring synth leads and shaggy hairdos ushered in an era of ‘70s-era rock n roll bravado. Luckily, the fad cooled off, bands started cutting their hair again, and indie rock took over. The band Neimo, however, has not been clued in on this entire progression of events leading up to the present. The self-titled EP is full of new wavy retro-rock which at times shows signs of succeeding. “Peter and the Wolves” has a slow-building verse which rolls along with just the right amount of swagger. The song crescendos but never quite peeks, leaving you waiting for what may come. Unfortunately though the next song, “Hot Girl”, contains the lyrics “Hot Girl / So sweet and sour / So hot and spicy, baby / You got me on my knees”. The lyrics wouldn’t be so bad if the band was able to pull them off, but they can not and the hurdle then becomes one that’s not so easily overcome.
