After receiving a limited edition release in 1998, the self-titled album by Phonophani eventually became one of the most critically acclaimed electronic records ever to come from Norway. With its recent re-release on Rune Grammofon records, the album, which is the work of instrumentalist/producer Espen Sommer Eide, should reach more listeners than ever before. Phonophani is light years away from a traditional electronic record. There’s not a true “beat” to be found on the album, and the music demands action from listeners’ brains, not their bodies. The best way to appreciate this music is simply to relax and be transported to strange, Nordic worlds by the music’s blend of unsettling electronics and swelling ambient instrumentals. This album is not for everyone, particularly people without headphones or ample amounts of patience, but adventurous listeners who explore Phonophani’s rich sonic landscapes will not be disappointed.
