SAFIA Are “Freakn Out” in Video for New Single (premiere)

One of Australia's hottest pop acts SAFIA releases a groovy electropop single with "Freakn Out".

SAFIA can comfortably lay claim to being one of the hottest acts in Australia right now. With their debut album, Internal reaching number two in the Aria charts, numerous festival appearances, award nominations and a sold out nationwide tour, things are looking pretty rosy for the Canberra group.

The band have wisely decided to strike while the iron’s hot by releasing a video for new single “Freakn Out”. The first song the band wrote after the release of Internal is an electropop song that has mainstream hit potential written all over it. Built on a polished bed of bold synths, bright keyboards and Dre-style plinking pianos the song is the perfect showcase for Woolner’s manipulated vocals which are pitched, stretched and distorted to startling effect.

While it might work perfectly as a flawless summer anthem it maintains a quirkiness that’s reflected in the, at times, surreal accompanying video. In it frontman Ben Woolner struggles to escape a straitjacket, with other band members Michael Bell and Harry Sayers mouthing the song’s hook whilst seemingly dressed as extras from Doctor Who. Elsewhere members of the band skip with a string of sausages, use a dangling heart as a punchbag and receive major surgery from a surgeon who appears to be woefully under qualified.

With hints of Major Lazer, ODESZA and Flume, radio-friendly, grooving banger “Freakn Out” promises to gain the trio a following well beyond their Native Australia.
