Slackk – “Skeleton Crew” (Singles Going Steady)

"Skeleton Crew" is the musical equivalent of walking inside a dark, eerie cave.

Emmanuel Elone: “Skeleton Crew” is the musical equivalent of walking inside a dark, eerie cave. The wonky synths are moody and glitchy, as they form these unnatural rhythms within the track. Slackk maintains this dimly lit atmosphere throughout the song, but that’s the real issue. “Skelton Key” encourages us to enter this dungeon, but leaves before we even get to see and understand why we entered in the first place. Sure, the synths are nice, but they lack the climactic ending to bring the song together. Slackk made a decent track, but it could have been much improved with a few minor tweaks here and there. [6/10]

Pryor Stroud: Spattered with needle-point synth stabs and sludge-coated 808’s, “Skeleton Crew” is an ominous dark-electro episode of late night somnambulism wherein the afflicted sleepwalker staggers unwittingly toward a door locked for unknown reasons. The mood it instantiates — tense, jittery, about to burst at the seams — is a potent one, which is to say, one that is hard to shake: as the track progresses, and the somnambulist it envisions inches closer to the locked door, the sense of discomfort it imposes on you becomes almost intolerable. [7/10]

Chris Ingalls: I like the way a lot of different sounds and samples are thrown into the mix. Some things don’t work, but most of it does, particularly the overmodulated, reverb-drenched synth patches and the stuttering, tentative tempo. The noise is equal parts menacing and playful, like some sort of Cylon dance party. A beautiful, noisy mess. [7/10]

Chad Miller: “Skeleton Crew” seems like a perfectly suited name for the tune as the track sounds both haunted and like clacking bones. The intro really caught my attention and pulled me right into the whole track, and I mean the whole track because once you’ve heard the beginning, you’ve pretty much heard the entire thing. Though a journey into new territories would have been nice, it wasn’t especially noticeable either. [7/10]
