Spiral Beach: Ball

Spiral Beach are pretty silly, but in the best possible way. The teenaged foursome play shows in their socks, use plenty of props, and bounce around the stage with enough innocent glee to melt the heart of even the most cynical hipster. Their self-titled debut was full of nonsensical lyrics and infectious, exuberant, new-wavy electro-pop. Their follow-up, Ball, is much of the same. Their sound has been polished by some sleeker production, filled out in the bottom to make it even more dance-friendly, but the core of what makes them so lovable — that bouncy joy — has been left intact. It’s hard to believe that their records will ever quite live up to the absurdist fun of their live shows, but there’s no denying that Ball is one more reason to fall in love with what must be Toronto’s most lovable young poptet.
