New York City is even deeper in the thrall of live music with the Grammy awards approaching. Numerous corporate sponsors have events with big artists. One, Citi Sound Vault has the National, Eminem, the Roots and more at small venues. Another corporation, Mastercard, opened a pop-up space where fans can buy albums, grab a free drink and hear live music. The series began with Maggie Rogers (who noted she was working on her debut album) and St. Vincent.

St. Vincent was the star of the night, transforming her powerful Masseduction songs into poignant numbers through piano accompaniment from Thomas Bartlett (aka Doveman). Her proper album tour (that ended recently) found her atop a platform, on stage solo with her signature guitar, and some powerful visuals behind her. Here, Annie Clark was free to move about without her guitar. That allowed the audience to watch her count the number of pills in a week on her fingers for “Pills”, to watch her sing her heart out on “Young Lover”. For the finale, Clark welcomed the audience to sing “New York” along with her, as she stepped off the stage and into the arms of the crowd, embracing several herself.

St. Vincent recently was at Day for Night festival and at NPR’s Tiny Desk (available here) but her tour continues into the summer including additional festival appearances. Mastercard House will have free shows from SZA, Portugal. the Man, Francis and the Lights, EPMD, Big Daddy Kane, Biz Markie, and Ghostface Killah with Raekwon, and Dua Lipa through Saturday before the Grammys on Sunday. Check out a couple of videos and photos from the event below.
