Sugarplum Fairies – “Escondite (feat. RT Valine)” (video) (Premiere)

In bringing together the stylings of classic California rock and dusty, melancholic noir, indie rockers Sugarplum Fairies create their own unique vision of Los Angeles in their song "Escondite".

The dusky, shadow-tinged depiction of Los Angeles that is “Escondite”, a track off of the latest Sugarplum Fairies album Godspeed & Silver Linings, brings to mind the infamous opening credits of The Big Lebowski, tumbleweed and all. Yet while the sonic-to-aural comparison is uncanny, there are no bedraggled bowlers or mustachioed narrators here; instead, the echoey vocal of frontwoman Silvia Ryder plays against the gravelly bass vocals of RT Valine, crafting a sonic landscape indebted to ’70’s California rock. The vision of Los Angeles that Sugarplum Fairies construct throughout Godspeed & Silver Linings, however, is entirely their own.

Following videos for “Moment of Fame” and “St. Andrew’s Place”, the band has now released a video for “Escondite”, available to view exclusively here at PopMatters.

Ryder details the video: “‘Escondite’ features RT Valine of the Los Angeles based country noir band RT n’ the 44s, who use instruments crafted from tin, 2×4’s, and salvaged parts. The video was shot by Roman Jakobi, who also served as Director of Photography on the legendary iTunes spot featuring Bob Dylan. The car shots were filmed in Los Angeles in Echo Park and on Skid Row in Downtown, using two cameras inside the car and two cameras mounted onto the exterior of the car”.

Godspeed & Silver Linings is out now through Starfish Records.
