Citing such bands as Neutral Milk Hotel and the Mountain Goats as major influences, Brooklyn quintet Three Thousand Rivers taps into Americana, funk, jazz, and African music on their forthcoming EP Body Aha. Listening to the track “Gut”, which we’re glad to premiere, you might wonder just how big an XTC influence looms over this band, because the similarity is uncanny on this ebullient song.

“For the closer on our EP we wanted something really big, but something driving too,” the band tells PopMatters. “As much as we could, we wanted to try to produce something with the momentum of Saintseneca, but also something that had sweet, lilting melodies that seem to come out of nowhere, like Neutral Milk Hotel. Brian Trahan (our awesome engineer) worked some serious magic to get this gritty, bright guitar sound that makes the track punch, and Talia Lavin wrote some great lyrics for the track. It’s about finding yourself in a stagnant place, deciding to make some moves, and getting yourself going.”

Body Aha will be released 28 July.
