The Mood is a New York City-based power-pop band that knows its way around a melodic hook. Synesthaesia is a six-track EP that shows off the band’s knack for catchy vocal harmonies and bright, bouncy songs. The irresistible romantic pop of “Eskimo Scientist” is the best song here, highlighted by Marco Agiro’s lead vocals and Corinne Callen’s harmonies. The other five tracks each have their own strengths as well, particularly peppy opener “In the Forest”, with its lyrics about getting away from the city. The slightly darker “Quarter Century Kid” starts with moody synth effects but quickly changes into the EP’s most effective rocker. It’s a bit of a shame that the band’s name is so generic, because they’re very good at what they do. What they’re doing isn’t particularly unique, but there’s always room out there for more good songwriters. And with Synthaesthesia The Mood is off to a strong start.
