Vieux Farka Touré returns to NYC as part of Live@365 Series

Earlier this year, Malian musician Vieux Farka Touré released Mon Pays another strong album in his career. We caught his set briefly at the Clearwater Festival this year (a couple images from the festival are below) and have hoped to see him again. So it is exciting to hear that Touré is coming back to New York in October to perform some of his desert blues at the City University of New York’s Graduate Center as part of the new season of the global music series Live@365, which begins this week.

The first event is a show dubbed ‘Modern Ukraine’ and featuring the music of DakhaBrakha, making their US premiere on Thursday the 19th. The rest of the series includes, as the press release reads, “blues-rock from Mali with Vieux Farka Toure on October 29; Sephardic piyyutim from the Brooklyn-based Rabbi Gad Bouskila and Hazzan Yohai Cohen supported by the New York Andalus Ensemble on November 5; indigenous Hawaiian sounds from mother/son duo Kekuhi and Kaumakaiwa Kanaka’ole on November 20; strictly traditional fado from Portuguese star Ricardo Ribeiro on February 5; modern classical compositions from Sri Lankan and Syrian-born Dinuk Wijeratne and Kinan Azmeh on March 11; and Andalusian Gypsy Flamenco legend Miguel “El Funi” on April 16.” More information about this festival and links to purchase tickets can be found at their website.
