Foot stompers, toe tappers, musical curios and bona fide floor fillers, mark another excellent entry in the beautifully packaged VampiSoul release R&B Hipshaker’s Vol.3 – Just a Little Bit of the Jumpin’ Bean. Another expertly crafted collection of deep cuts and rarities, uncovering hitherto unheard R&B gems, culled from the vaults of Federal and King labels. Compiled by WFMU’s DJ Mr. Fine Wine, this third entry collates 20 lost treasures exhumed from the late ’50s and early ’60s. It’s a heady mix, with the jangling guitar of Freddie King and the back cracking beats of Cozy Cole, sitting alongside the tight harmonies of the Mystics and the incendiary vocals of Little Willie John. This is clearly a labour of love, with the time and care that’s gone into its conception evident in the wide — eyed joy which it manages to elicit in the listener across its near hour long running time. It’s an instant vintage dance party, all you’ll need to bring is a rug… and get cutting.
