Wighnomy Brothers: Metawuffmischfelge

Like its high-culture predecessor, minimal techno makes the most sense when heard in cycles. Basic arithmetic marks the difference between an enjoyable mix and an immersive experience. Wighnomy Brothers, DJs who have made their name as masters of the sparsely groovy remix (and getting drunk during DJ sets, apparently), make good use of addition and subtraction in forming 4/4 poem of funk and wonder on the mix release, Metawuffmischfelge.

To start with, barely any time is wasted before False’s “Fed On Youth” pops up, and far from the first time. From the most minimal alias of the unstoppable Matthew Dear, it’s a dynamite track, and mixes surprisingly well with tender vocals courtesy of dream popstress Lisa Gerrard. While Wighnomy are good at bolstering their mixes with cyclical bursts of vitality, it would have been nicer to have a few more variables thrown in the mix. Hearing “Fed On Youth” repeated on so many other tracks can only stretch the descending hook so far, before one begins to understand how the Brothers can be drunk while making such heady mixes. Still, for a thinking man’s dance party, this is as engrossingly funky as it gets.
