Revivalism can be a tricky thing. If it’s too noticeable, you’re pegged for being a blatant rip-off. Not noticeable enough and you’re accused of being a tired and generic retread. All of the most winning revivalists seem to be the ones that can make their influences clear while still creating something entirely modern. Interpol, Franz Ferdinand, Sloan, and the Killers all figured out how to do it early on, and now King Washington can be added to that mix. There’s an undeniable understanding of pop sensibility running throughout The Gears which is evidenced in everything from production to vocal melody. All of the songs here are winsome blasts of accessible power pop that recall the greats but also remind you that King Washington is running the show — and the show’s well worth the price of admission.
