Darq E Freaker – “2C-I” (Singles Going Steady)

Sprinkled with micro-malfunctions and arcade-game sound design, "2C-I" sounds like a cartoon space war was recorded.

Chris Ingalls: Someone bought a Moog and really went to town with it. The sounds and samples are completely over the top, which gives the whole thing an urgent, refreshing vibe. Nice cool-down halfway through. And while an album’s worth of this may give me a headache, but it’s quite enjoyable in bite-sized form. [7/10]

Emmanuel Elone: “2C-I” has the entire kitchen sink thrown on it. There are sound effects, synths, drums, vocal samples, and wobbly hi hats all in the mix at the same time. For some parts, the blend works surprisingly well; mostly, however, this is a bi-polar record that sounds about as cohesive as if someone punched in random buttons on a beat making machine. [4/10]

Pryor Stroud: Sprinkled with micro-malfunctions and arcade-game sound design, “2C-I” sounds like a cartoon space war was recorded, remixed by a coked-out production team, and then offered up as an after-the-fact DJ set for the surviving veterans. It’s too frenetic and bouncing-off-the-wall hyper to take seriously, but it flaunts a sonic inventiveness that reaps rewards if you dig into it. Just don’t dig too deep; there’s not much there. [5/10]

Chad Miller: I was really digging the first section. Freaker probably could have spent more time using his chords, and the second half seemed less than necessary considering it was almost an exact replica of the first. On the bright side, Freaker gets pretty inventive with his sounds, incorporating some exciting flavors into the mix. [7/10]
