He’s a Midwesterner, but Bucky Halker knows his Southern music. Everything from Texas country to Delta blues shows up on Part Two of his latest project, Wisconsin 2.13.63. One of the album’s more memorable tracks is “(Winter Song)”, it’s dark, folky, and conjures up images of a cruel yet beautiful Wisconsin winter. Interesting enough, the lead vocal on this track is from Janet Bean, while Halker is more than happy to take on a supporting role. Fans of classic country music will also be pleased to hear “T. Texas Tyler”, a tribute to the 1950s singer-turned-druggie-turned-preacher. Though Halker’s work normally revolves around labor songs and Woody Guthrie-esque protests, Volume 2 is a departure from that theme. Nevertheless it’s still an enjoyable listen from a talented — and unknown — storyteller.
