Chris Stalcup and the Grange – “Get You Off My Mind” (premiere)

In a just world, Stalcup's name should be included amongst the new breed of artists including Isbell, Simpson and Stapleton who are marrying tradition and truth.

Trucking in the music of moonlit roads and dark barrooms, Georgia’s Chris Stalcup and the Grange turn turmoil into glorious song. A Southern smart aleck with an aching heart, Stalcup draws from personal — and typical — life events on his forthcoming sophomore album, Downhearted Fools.

After 2014’s debut album, Dixie Electric Company, Stalcup cast domestic security aside, trading in his job for a life on road. The fallout of this decision informs the rambling country rocker “Get You Off My Mind”, with Stalcup opining, “Here I am writing you this song / To get you off my mind.” A balanced report on fractured relationships and their aftermath, “Get You Off My Mind” is a rare playful turn for a songwriter with an acute understanding of life’s emotional turning points. While maintaining his trademark pathos, “Get You Off My Mind” speaks to Stalcup’s new outlook: “Life has been a lot like picking up painting again, and knowing that making a brush stroke to the left or to the right or using an unintended color isn’t going to ruin the whole thing.”

In a just world, Stalcup’s name should be included amongst the new breed of artists including Jason Isbell, Sturgill Simpson and Chris Stapleton who are marrying tradition and truth.

Downhearted Fools will be released on September 16th via DirtLeg Records.
