Apparently, the members of Ferocious Eagle can’t decide whether or not to be sonic minimalists. Sometimes, they seem to be focused on making bare-bones rock and roll. Their ensemble consists of merely two guitarists and a drummer, and their songs are mostly straightforward, riff-driven vehicles. Throughout the group’s debut, The Sea Anemone Inside of Me Is Mighty, however, Ferocious Eagle wallows in off-kilter harmonic luxury. The guitarists choose dissonant, almost jazzy voicings over the simplistic power chords of traditional punk music. Their approach is interesting, but not amazing. Ferocious Eagle falls on the musical spectrum somewhere between Fugazi and Hella, but their failure to yield to conventions of genre actually hurts their cause. The band is definitely ferocious, but its members never seem to let their guard down and be totally reckless. Sea Anemone is neither as delightfully brutal as the best punk rock nor as deliriously heady as the trippiest experimental rock, but it’s still worth a listen.
